Grace & Cody — Maternity Session — photographic study

I know there can be a lot happening before a family session even begins. Someone cannot find a shoe. Someone has decided they do not like the outfit. You are trying to get everyone out the door and wondering whether the photographs will somehow look as rushed as the morning feels.

You can arrive as people. You do not need to arrive as a perfectly coordinated campaign.

As a mother and a photographer, I care about the connection in these images. We can make a photograph where everyone looks toward the camera. We can also make room for the way your family actually moves together.

Choose a time that works for the people coming

Beautiful light matters. So do naps, meals, energy and how far everyone needs to travel. Tell me about the practical parts of your day before we settle on a session time.

For a maternity session, that includes how you are feeling, how much walking is comfortable and whether you need easy access to somewhere you can rest. We can choose a setting around your actual needs. There is no prize for making yourself uncomfortable for a photograph.

Coordinate without dressing as identical people

A small group of colors can help the photographs feel connected, but everyone does not need to wear the same thing. Think about textures, movement and clothes that feel comfortable together.

Try outfits on ahead of time. Check whether children can run, sit or be picked up in what they are wearing. For maternity portraits, bring something that lets you move and breathe. If you want a more styled approach, we can talk through it before the session rather than improvising at the location.

Give children something to do

Walking together, holding hands, being lifted, looking for something along a path… movement gives us interactions to photograph. We can notice the expressions that happen around an activity instead of asking a child to hold a smile forever.

The family photograph from Margie’s collection shown here has that sense of movement. The Grace and Cody maternity portrait is quieter. There is room for both kinds of energy in personal storytelling.

Tell me who needs a little extra care

If someone is shy, easily overwhelmed or needs an accessible location, tell me what would help. You do not need to disclose private details to explain a practical need. We can talk about breaks, pace and how much direction feels useful.

Bring the basics your family normally needs, including water and any familiar comfort items. A session should work with your people rather than depend on everyone becoming unusually patient for an afternoon.

Think about the photographs you want to keep

Is there a particular relationship you want documented? You with your child? Siblings together? A portrait that includes everyone who is usually behind the camera? Tell me. Those photographs are worth planning for.

And then let us leave some room for what happens. The look between two people often lasts less than a second. It does not need to be polished to be worth remembering.

For family, maternity and personal sessions in Santa Cruz and the surrounding area, send me who is coming and what you want to hold onto from this season.
